One former Texas high school football coach will not be getting a contract extension at his current college job. According to a report from The Arizona Republic, Arizona State head coach Todd Graham will not receive a contract extension heading into the 2017 season.

Graham had received a one-year extension after every season since he arrived in Tempe. He remains under contract until June of 2021 but this is the first time that his contract will be under five years.

Per the report:

ASU Vice President for Athletics Ray Anderson said a contract extension for Graham is not mandatory although his contract reads: “If grounds do not exist for termination for cause, ASU will ask the board to extend coach’s contract for one additional year following completion of the 2016 football season.”

The former Allen High School head coach is looking to turn things around at Arizona State after two consecutive losing seasons. Last season was particularly tough for the Sun Devils as they finished 5-7 and ended the year on a six-game losing streak.

Athletic director Ray Anderson also spoke in support of his head coach in the report, saying:

“We continue to have the right culture in terms of what we expect from our student-athletes and their leader as their football coach,” Anderson said. “I think we have recruited at a high level. I think we have been able to bring on coaching and staff for those that left that will elevate us.

Todd Graham has brought in Alabama assistant Billy Napier as the new offensive coordinator while also bringing in former Baylor defensive coordinator Phil Bennett to coach up the Sun Devil defense that was one of the worst in the country last year.

The Sun Devils open their season on August 31 at home against New Mexico State.
