Every weekday until the beginning of the season, the TexasHSFootball.com staff writers will be picking the teams they think will win each district

Jonathan Rodriguez

It’s evident that this will still be Lamar’s district heading into 2017. Lamar returns both the District MVP and Offensive MVP in wide receiver Al’vonte Woodard and running back Ta’zhawn Henry. Lamar also has three first-team all-district selections on defense returning with defensive lineman Joshua Landry, Linebacker Justin Fontneaux and defensive back Anthony Cook showcasing the pool of talent at Lamar. Lamar went 11-2 on the season and was undefeated in district play and are just a higher tier of football compared to their district counterparts. Lamar will be a delight to watch on the field this season.

Prediction: Houston Lamar

Cody Daniel

It’s borderline impossible to imagine any program other than Lamar running away with the district title in 2017. The Texans are absolutely loaded at skill positions and feature three of the top 16 players in the state in cornerbacks Anthony Cook (No. 1) and D’shawn Jamison (No. 16) and wide receiver Al’vonte Woodard (No. 10). Running back Ta’Zhawn Henry and Baylor defensive tackle commit Joshua Landry are among other future Division  I talents scattered around Lamar’s roster.

Lamar cruised through its district slate unblemished last season and collectively lost only two games by a total of six points, and the Texans are even better now.

Prediction: Houston Lamar

Tony Venegas

Houston Lamar was able to handle this district with relative ease last year and I don’t think there is any indication of that changing in 2017.

Simply loaded, the Texans are stock full of talent at the skill positions on both sides of the football. On offense, running back Ta’zhawn Henry and receiver Al’vonte Woodard among are the standouts while cornerbacks Anthony Cook and D’Shawn Jamison lead the way for an ultra- talented defense.

Simply put, Lamar is loaded for a big year and I think that starts with winning a district title. But this is a team that can make a deep run in the postseason and I expect the Texans to do that in a very difficult region.

District Pick: Houston Lamar

Hunter Cooke

I’m not saying that no one in this district can beat Houston Lamar, I’m just saying that it’s going to be a literal nightmare.

The Texans are loaded with talent, and are especially potent in the skill positions, DB and WR. They’re just going to be faster than most everyone that they’ll play. That talent might end up translating into big things for the Texans in late playoff rounds, but they’ll have to get out of the gauntlet of the Houston area first.

Prediction: Houston Lamar
