Recruiting can be a roller coaster ride at times with constant contact to figuring out where you want to go. At the end of the day, it’s just about finding the right fit. That’s what El Paso El Dorado quarterback Cedarious Barfield sees out west at San Diego State.
The senior athlete became the first commit of the Class of 2018 for the Aztecs on Saturday night and after a weekend visit to the campus, the speedster felt it was the right time to make that commitment.

“First off, they have a great program of study I’m looking for (psychology), the campus is beautiful and it’s just a comfortable fit for my parents to entrust me and a place that I can call home.”
Barfield chose the Aztecs over offers from New Mexico, Southern Miss and hometown school UTEP among other offers. He had been planning on making his decision before the start of the upcoming season.
San Diego State was one of the first two FBS offers for Barfield back in April (Army had also offered on the same day). It was a combination of that early interest and building relationships that helped close the deal.
“It helped a lot. Coach (Tony) White would check up on me and I just felt like that relationship was growing to a point that I could trust him with everything and it’s been great.”
Family also played a role in Barfield’s decision to head west. His parents, both of whom are retired from the U.S. Army, will still get the chance to see their son play as both they and his coaches wanted to make sure Barfield made the right decision for himself.
“My parents have always told me to find the place that’s best for me as a person,” he said, “They also said don’t let anyone else make my decision since I’ll be the one in those situations and I just felt San Diego State was the best place for me.”

That positional versatility is something that should serve Barfield well at the collegiate level. Throughout his recruitment, schools had been looking at him to play a variety of positions from quarterback to receiver to running back. San Diego State is looking at a different direction and it’s something that doesn’t phase the senior either.
“Right now, the coaches have been looking at me to play cornerback and also be a kick and punt returner and I could be used on offense in certain situations as well,” Barfield said, “Last year was actually the first time since I was seven that I hadn’t played more than one positon all year. I feel that I’ll be used to it and be comfortable no matter where they put me.”
With his decision behind him, Barfield is ready to put the recruiting process behind him and focus on his current Aztec team. After putting up more than 4,600 yards and 55 touchdowns as a full-time quarterback in 2016, the senior signal caller has high expectations as the favorite to win District 1-6A in 2017.
“This year, we just have another target on our back. Everyone is going to be gunning for us and I just know we have to be on top of our game every time. We know we’re going to get everybody’s best shot but I think we’re ready and I’m expecting big things for us this year.”
