Euless Trinity Hosts Montgomery In Newly Scheduled Game

Slated for a high-octane home game against the Spring Westfield Mustangs on September 8th, the Euless Trinity Trojans were forced to find another opponent last week as they were informed that the Mustangs would not be able to travel and compete in Euless due to circumstances surrounding the catastrophic flooding in the Spring-Aldine area because of Hurricane Harvey.

Enter Montgomery.

The Montgomery Bears were also in search of a replacement after both Strake Jesuit and Aldine Eisenhower cancelled. As a result, both teams coordinated and here we have this week two matchup.

Trinity comes off a rather disappointing season (7-4, 4-3 in district play in 2016) in which they pulled the short stick and played and fell to Allen in the bi-district round last season. Even more disappointing is the thrashing that Trinity took last week against Union (Tulsa, OK) in which the perennial state contending Trojans lost, 38-7.

This obviously isn’t the dominant Trinity team that was once in a Gatorade commercial. That said, it’s still a good team and should be a challenge for future opponents this season. Trojans fans will definitely be happy to see senior running back Courage Keihn returning to the backfield in 2017. Keihn carried the ball 202 times for 1557 yards and 15 touchdowns last season.

On the other hand, Montgomery is riding high off their first playoff appearance in 6A last season and looks to keep the ball rolling with a very strong senior class. The Bears proved itself worthy in the highest and most competitive conference of high school football in Texas last season as they lost to a well-balanced Rockwall team in a 51-41 shootout thriller.

Who has ‘The Edge’?

The Bears have still yet to play a regular season game but have scrimmaged against a wildly talented College Station squad who is ranked fifth overall in 5A play. Euless Trinity will have the physicality edge due to the shear number of athletes on both sides of the trenches but also because they have a game under their belt.

Montgomery however has the edge when it comes to chemistry and scheme. Seniors Jordan Hood (QB) and Alex Nunn (RB) provide a nice one-two punch in the offensive backfield. The two combined for over 1,100 yards on the ground last year, as the Bears offense revolves around a series of run-pass options (RPO’s). This will be an exciting test for the Bears offense as the face off against a defense that has been dominant in years past and may still possess some of the ball-hawking skills that teams like the 2002 and 2005 Trojans had.

Fortunately for the Trojans, this game will go down to who controls the line of scrimmage on each side of the ball. In what’s a definitely lopsided difference in physical size and strength between the two teams offensive and defensive lines, the Bears will find it tough to cause any movement upfront on the Trojan’s offense nor prevent much penetration from any defensive tackles or blitzing linebackers on the Trojan’s defense.

Prediction: Euless Trinity 38, Montgomery 17
