It was a beautiful night in Buddy Moorhead Stadium as the Conroe Tigers opened their season against the Huntsville Hornets. Led by a swarming defense, the visiting Hornets throttled Conroe 41-14.
A Tale of Two Quarters
The first quarter was a defensive battle with Huntsville preventing Donaven Lloyd and Jordan Black from getting anywhere. Conroe’s defense made their residence in Huntsville’s backfield early, forcing multiple turnovers. Scoring finally opened up early in the second quarter off of a punt that was blocked and recovered in the end zone by Alen Barrera.
The second quarter was a complete turn-around for Huntsville, who finally found holes in the Tigers’ defense, scoring 2 rushing touchdowns, a 65-yard end around by Jordan Baker and a goal line rush by Jaeryne Green. Quarterback Jayce Elliot had a solid second quarter after 2 interceptions in the first. He had throws of 22 and 28 that were instrumental in Huntsville scoring 21 unanswered points, going into the half up 21 to 14.
Hornets step on the gas and don’t look back
Huntsville came out from the break hard and fast. They forced 3 turnovers within the first 9 minutes of the second half, going up 35-14 before Conroe had a chance to realize how deep of a hole they were in. The Tigers’ defense were on their heels the entire second half, hardly getting a rest due to their struggling offense. Huntsville continued to pile on early in the fourth as running back Jaeryne Green ran in his fourth touchdown of the night making it 41-14. Conroe’s offense finally got their first first down of the half with 9:24 remaining in the game, but it was too little too late.
On to the next week
For Conroe, this loss came at a bad time, as division rivals The Woodlands College Park, Oak Ridge and West Brook won their games this week. Running back Donaven Lloyd was the only thing to cheer about on a night where nothing went right. The defense looked strong early, but lost control in the second quarter and never recovered.
For Huntsville, nothing is better than a dominant win with things left to work on. The offense opened sluggishly, and had a couple turnovers early in the game. But, Jaeryne Green showed himself to be a powerhouse running all over Conroe with three touchdowns to his name. The defense was stout all game and should push to repeat their performance all season.
