Tech defense continues to impress

In some alternative fantasy world that’s somehow actually reality, the Texas Tech defense is a decent bunch this year. Red Raiders coordinator David Gibbs returned to his former job in Houston and had one of the best performances of his Lubbock tenure. Tech held Houston to 427 yards of total offense and forced five turnovers in Saturday’s victory. The turnover count marked the most since the Red Raiders forced the same number at Kansas in 2008.
The first half was dominated by coach Gibbs schemes, restricting the Cougars to 133 yards in the first half and scoreless through two quarters. Texas Tech has no held opponents scoreless in five quarters this season; they only accomplished this seven times throughout the entirety of last year.

Baylor injuries results in bleak future

The flames of the Baylor dumpster fire were temporarily quelled in a 49-41 firefight loss to Oklahoma, but injury woes may rekindle the blaze. Lead receiver Chris Platt and defensive end Xavier Jones are done for the year. Through four games, Platt had 401 yards and five touchdowns; he is the only player in the country with four receptions of 50+ yards. Jones made six tackles through Baylor’s first four games, including two for loss and 1½ quarterback sacks.
Platt’s loss is big for quarterback Zach Smith, who is fresh off throwing 463 yards and four touchdowns. The Bears weakened offense will face a Kansas State secondary allowing only 153.7 average passing yards a game.

Aggies appreciating Christian Kirk

The Aggies receiver was named SEC Special Teams Player of the Week after a 100-yard kick return for a touchdown — the eighth such by an Aggie that traveled the length of the field. The return score was the sixth of Kirk’s career — the most by any player in school history.
Notching another feather in his cap, Kirk finished with 110 yards through the air against Arkansas and scored the game-winner in OT. The performance was a drastic improvement from two weeks ago, where the stud receiver struggled with 34 yards and a touchdown, including a botched punt return.

TCU best in Texas

After knocking the Cowboys off their Oklahoma saddles, TCU has a chance to be the only Texas FBS program in the CFP — an honor that no Lone Star program has yet to accomplish. OSU was No. 6 and favored by 12 heading into the matchup. Instead, coach Gary Patterson displayed why he’s the best coach in the Big 12, flipping the tables on oddsmakers and coming away with a 44-31 victory. The defense held coach Mike Gundy’s team 23 points below their season scoring average. The offense has been the pleasant surprise of the season, averaging 47.8 points per game behind Kenny Hill’s 72.6% completion rate.
The good news: the Horned Frogs have a favorable schedule heading towards the inaugural Big 12 conference championship. The bad: Coach Patterson is preparing for two likely meetings with the Sooners.
