1. TCU
The Horned Frogs notched another important conference win at home over West Virginia, and are now in the driver’s seat in the conference title race.
2. Oklahoma State
Despite a bye week, the Pokes move up to number two after Oklahoma and West Virginia both stumble. Oklahoma State’s loss to TCU also looks a little more understandable now.
3. Oklahoma
The Sooners fell victim to a huge upset at the hands of Iowa State, falling as 30-point favorites. OU still has an impressive win over Ohio State on its resume, but is now in a bit of a hole in the Big 12 title race with one loss before even playing the tougher opponents in the conference. Just one game removed from struggling to put away Baylor, Oklahoma will need a lightbulb to go off soon if they want to compete for anything meaningful this season.
4. West Virginia
The Mountaineers just barely fell short of a victory that would have kicked open the doors on the Big 12 standings. Each of their two losses were close games against very solid opponents in Virginia Tech and TCU (both games were played away from home).
5. Texas Tech
Texas Tech dismantled Kansas 65-19, and find themselves ranked in the AP Top 25 for the first time since 2013. The Red Raiders could make a real statement next weekend on the road in Morgantown. A victory could raise some eyebrows across the Big 12.
6. Iowa State
The Cyclones now sit at 3-2 after their stunning 38-31 upset in Norman without starting quarterback Jacob Park. Had Iowa State finished off Iowa earlier this year, they would be 4-1 with two wins over legitimate Power Five programs on their resume. If they can sustain this improvement consistently through the end of the season, ISU may be in store for a great year.
7. Texas
Freshman quarterback Sam Ehlinger looked the part in Texas’ 40-34 comeback victory in double overtime against Kansas State. The Horns have struggled in their two Big 12 victories, but are finding ways to win regardless.
8. Kansas State
Bill Snyder’s Wildcats now have a pair of ugly losses at the hands of Texas and Vanderbilt, while their wins over Baylor, Charlotte and Central Arkansas aren’t very impressive either. With TCU and Oklahoma up next for K-State, it’s difficult to see them rebounding for a while.
9. Kansas
The Jayhawks got beat from start to finish against Texas Tech, which has to be disappointing coming off a bye week with extra time to prepare and a fairly competitive game with West Virginia two weeks ago. Kansas is set to travel to Ames next weekend for a tough but winnable game.
10. Baylor
Still sitting at 0-5 after a bye week, Baylor didn’t have a chance to move up in the power rankings this week. They travel to Stillwater for a tough matchup against top 15-ranked Oklahoma State.
