BELLMEAD, Texas- The Waco La Vega Pirates were looking to stay undefeated on the season, as well as capture their fourth straight district championship. Gatesville was hoping to avenge their first loss of the season, but in the end, La Vega was just too dominant for the Hornets as they prevailed 49-7.
The Pirates quarterback Jamal Williams was remarkable in his final home game under his dad and head coach Willie Williams. As a starter, the younger Williams is undefeated in the regular season during his career and he has an overall record of 38-1 as a starter. He had a hand in all seven of the Pirates touchdowns. Jamal was 16/22 for 244 yards, 3 touchdowns and 1 interception, he also carried the ball 12 times for 43 yards and 2 touchdowns.
La Vega is known for their running game, but the Pirates showed off their passing abilities during the first half tonight. Jamal Williams connected with three different receivers on touchdown passes and the Pirates were able to add two more touchdowns on the ground.
La Vega started off strong on their opening drive, but a bad snap forced a 14 yard loss. Facing a third down and 22, senior running back Kemoche Hobbs exploded through the Hornets defense for a 36 yard run. Jamal Williams was able to find Josh Bryant for a seven yard touchdown pass, giving the Pirates their first lead of the game 7-0.
Gatesville took the field without star quarterback Jett Truss on their first offensive play of the game. The Hornets elected to line up in the Wildcat formation with Zach Mueller taking the snap. Truss made his way on the field, but the Hornets were forced to call a timeout on the third play of the game due to confusion. The drive eventually stalled for Gatesville and Truss got off an excellent pooch kick placing the Pirates on their own one yard line.
La Vega took control from that point on in the first half scoring four more touchdowns, three of those coming in a span of 4:33 during the second quarter. The Pirates took a 35-0 lead into halftime; Jamal Williams was 11/13 for 201 yards, 3 touchdowns and 1 interception.
The Hornets finished the first half with 37 total yards of offense. Quarterback Jett Truss was 3/11 passing for 18 yards and 1 interception, while adding 5 yards on the ground.
The Hornets were able to get on the board after the Pirates were hit with 35 yards on penalties. Jett Truss took the ball in for three yards on the quarterback keeper, with 6:26 in the third quarter. Gatesville wouldn’t be able to find the end zone again on the night.
La Vega finished the game with 420 total yards of offense and 244 of those were passing yards. Gatesville finished the game with 164 total yards.
