The Woodlands Highlanders takes on the Rockwall Yellow Jackets in a first round matchup on Saturday. The Woodlands have seven straight wins since an opening loss to Katy. Rockwall is 5-5, but are a lot better than their record seems to show.
Rockwall is led by star junior quarterback Jacob Clark who’s coming off a three touchdown, 239-yard performance that helped the Yellow Jackets clinch a playoff berth. Now, they have a tough opponent in the Highlander. The high-octane offense led by Clark, who boasts a TCU offer, has plenty of weapons in senior Cameron Crayton, sophomore Jaxon Smith and Carson Sargent. Their balanced out by running back Zach Henry who’s coming off a 131-yard game of his own. Pitted against another high-octane offense, it comes down to which defense can make the most stops. Will Rockwall be up to the task?
The Woodlands are one of the most complete teams in Texas. The star for them is Texas Tech wide receiver commit KeSean Carter. With starting quarterback Quinn Binney going down, Quinton Johnson has stepped up, and stepped up well even going as far as taking over the starting job. Whether Binney will take that job back is unknown but which ever quarterback gets the start has plenty of help.
Running back Bryeton Gilford has the ability to change the pace of the typical pass-first offense. Outside of Carter, receivers Connor Klapesky and Malik Johnson open up the offense, and when Carter pulls defenders away, the other two make big plays. On defense, they’re a hard-hitting squad led by Jackson Shearer. Matched up against a high-octane offense, they’ll be pushed, but if they want to advance, they best not break.
