One of the best players that Sam Houston State has had in recent years is taking home some hardware for the second straight year. Quarterback Jeremiah Briscoe was named the winner of the Walter Payton Award, which is given to the most outstanding offensive player in the FCS.

Briscoe also becomes the first two-time winner of the award, joining former Appalachian State quarterback Armanti Edwards (2008-09).
“Winning this award last year meant everything to me and I think this year it means a little more,” Briscoe via a release from the school. “My college career has been an absolute roller coaster. To go from UAB, playing a couple of games and then finding out the program was shutting down, I had no idea what I was going to do. But Coach Keeler and Sam Houston gave me a great opportunity and if someone would have told me three years later that I would have won the Walter Payton Award back-to-back, I’d have called them a liar straight to their face.”
Briscoe led the Bearkats to a 12-2 record in 2017 as the team advanced to the semifinals of the FCS playoffs. Individually, the senior from Houston Stratford finished with 5,003 yards and 45 touchdowns, becoming the first player in program history to surpass 5,000 yards passing in a single season.
He leaves as one of the most decorated players in Sam Houston State history. Briscoe now owns the school record for total yards passing, total offense and touchdown passes while also holding the single-season records in each of those categories.
