SAN ANTONIO — The wait is finally over, as UTSA has finally hired an offensive coordinator after firing Frank Scelfo.
UTSA coach Frank Wilson announced the hire of 62-year-old Al Borges in a Friday morning press release from the university.
Borges has coached for 36 years throughout the FBS Division I. He’s had stops at Boise State, Michigan, Oregon, UCLA and most recently at Auburn. The position as an offensive analyst at Auburn was a first for Borges since 1985, as he was not the offensive coordinator.
At UTSA, Borges will also take over duties as the quarterbacks coach. Wilson expressed the excitement of bringing the veteran coach on board in the release.
“I am thrilled to be able to announce the hiring of Al Borges as our new offensive coordinator,” Wilson said. “Al Borges has a masterful offensive mind and a coaching style that takes advantage of the talent and skillset of the players on the roster. His unique ability to develop quarterbacks is second to none. Our coaching staff got better today.”
Last year was Borges’ second stint at Auburn. Previously, he was the offensive coordinator for the Tigers from 2004-07. During those three years, Borges helped the Tigers to a 41-9 record.
He also helped three players to being first round picks in 2005.
A 1981 graduate of Cal State Chico, Borges and his wife Nikki have two children, Cole and Mady Joe.
