San Elizario High School named Roberto Herrera as the Eagles’ new he’d football coach Thursday. Herrera is in his third year with SEHS where he served the last two years as the football program’s defensive coordinator.
Herrera was promoted to the defensive coordinator role in 2018 where he led the defense to a 50 percent reduction in yards and points from the previous season. In the 2019 season, the defense continued their improvement eventually producing seven All-District team members. While a defensive coordinator, Herrera played a major role in helping the Eagles to the most victories in consecutive seasons since the 1999 and 2000 seasons.
Herrera’s defense was key in leading the 2018 team to their first playoff appearance in 20 years. He also was a big part of the 2018 and 2019 squads finishing the season intact- a first in the program’s history.
Herrera has 22 years of coaching experience. Herrera served as the head football coach for Fabens ISD as well as coaching football for Canutillo ISD. In the past 15 seasons, Herrera has made 12 playoff appearances with three different school districts.
Herrera is set to lead the team as they push towards the 2020 season.
