There were former Texas High School football star launching their NFL career all over the league this weekend. One that shined bright was former La Grange Leopards and Ohio State Buckeye running back, J.K. Dobbins.
Dobbins left OSU a year early. He had hopes of being a first-round draft pick. He was not picked.
The former Leopards star, one of the best running backs in Texas high school football history, fell to the 55th pick in the second round, to the Baltimore Ravens.
The Ravens already had one of the league’s top rushers on the team, Mark Ingram. As the season neared, it was expected that Dobbins was going to get an opportunity to get a few carries. In week one vs the Cleveland Browns, he was given just 7 carries, but he made the most of them, scoring two TD’s. Led by a great performance by Lamar Jackson, and aided by Dobbins two touchdowns, the Baltimore Ravens beat former Lake Travis High School QB, Baker Mayfield, and the Cleveland Browns, 38-6.
Dobbins looked good. He took about half the snaps at running back and was outstanding as a blocker in the passing game. It looks like Dobbins will, at worst, split carries with Ingram, and it looks possible that he may become the lead back in Baltimore by the season’s end.
The Ravens head to Houston to play the Texans in week 2. Dobbins can expect to see an increased workload and should have more than 10 carries.
