Thompson shows off in first career start

A key early opt-out in the Texas secondary opened a spot for Jerrin Thompson and he answered the call in the Longhorns 69-31 blowout win at Kansas State on Saturday.

The former Lufkin star was starting in place of Caden Sterns (Cibolo Steele) and recorded his first career interception to help Texas (6-3, 5-3 Big 12) beat Kansas State (4-6, 4-5). The Longhorns jumped back into the Associated Press College Football Poll at No. 23 after the victory.

Thompson returned his interception 21 yards to the Kansas State three-yard line in the first quarter. Longhorns running back Roshon Johnson (Port Neches-Grove) punched it in on the following play to extend UT’s lead to 17-0 with less than five minutes left in the opening frame.

He also had three tackles and a pass breakup in the game.

Thomas was a Texas Sports Writer Association All-State Class 5A Honorable Mention in 2018 and a three-time all-district selection. He helped Lufkin make a trip to the Class 6A, Div. II Regional Quarterfinals in 2017.

Texas closes out the regular season at Kansas (0-9, 0-8) at 2:30 p.m. Saturday on ESPNU.
