QB Eric Schmid, a former prep star at The Woodlands High School, will lead the Sam Houston Bearkats into the FCS semifinals Saturday, May 8th against James Madison at Bowers Stadium in Huntsville. Sam Houston defeated 8-time FCS National Champion North Dakota State 24-20 on Saturday, on a go-ahead touchdown run by Schmid.
We take a look back at his senior year with the Highlanders in 2016.
Schmid had a standout career at The Woodlands, leading them to a 15-1 record and the 2016 Class 6A Division I state championship game his senior year. Schmid played for his dad at The Woodlands HS, head coach Mark Schmid. As a senior he threw for 3,629 yards, 46 TD and only 4 INT, while also rushing for 1,074 yards and 15 TD.
His prep accolades included:
- 2016 District 12-6A MVP
- 2016 Montgomery County Courier Player of the Year
- 2016 Class 6A AP all-state honorable mention
- 2016 Houston Touchdown Club Player of the Year finalist
- Fox News Houston Area MVP
He led an offense at The Woodlands that scored 691 points, averaging 43 points per game. Here are some of his senior year game performances in 2016:
- vs Spring: 172 yards, 2 TDs, 1 INT, 55 yards rushing, 1 TD.
- vs Katy: 103 yards, 1 passing TD, 1 rushing TD.
- vs George Ranch: 279 yards passing, 6 TDs.
- vs Montgomery: 235 yards passing, 3 TDs, 1 rushing TD.
- vs College Park: 145 yards passing, 4 TDs.
- vs Horn: 137 yards passing, 3 TDs, 1 rushing TD.
- vs Round Rock (Playoffs): 297 yards passing, 1 TD, 112 rushing yards 2 TDs.
- vs Allen (Playoffs): 3 passing TDs.
- vs Austin-Lake Travis (6A State Championship Game): 139 yards, 2 TDs, 2 INT, 53-yards rushing.
Schmid holds school records with 4,753 career passing yards and 57 TD.
He went 25-3 as starting quarterback for the Highlanders. He later attended SHSU prospect camp where he ran a 4.40 40-yard dash.
Schmid was named the Southland Conference Player of the Year -2020. Heading into the game with James Madison, he has thrown for 2381 yards, 16 passing TDs, and 7 INTs, while adding 327 rushing yards and 6 TDs on the ground for the Bearkats.
