Struggling Del Valle Loses Head Coach

Roof Replacement from Ja-Mar Roofing & Sheet Metal

After a pair of seasons with the Cardinals, Del Valle head football coach Bobby Acosta has resigned.

Coach Acosta announced that he will become an offensive coordinator at the collegiate level. The team hasn’t been revealed at the time of this writing, though coach Acosta told the Austin American-Statesman that it’s located six hours away from Central Texas.

During his tenure, Del Valle was a putrid 4-16 over the last two years. The record reflects the difficulties of competing in the same district as powerhouses Westlake, Lake Travis, and Dripping Springs.

Coach Acosta was originally recruited from IMG Academy in Florida. He joined Del Valle in April 2021. IMG won the national championship in 2020, going undefeated under his tutelage, and outscored opponents 381-82.

However, his transition to Texas HS Football was a real shock.

Del Valle experienced a significant talent gap in comparison to IMG — notable for its lack of resources to recruit talent all over the country, as opposed to enrolling homegrown competitors. All of coach Acosta’s linemen were shorter than six feet last season, another disadvantage to a city notable for rostering oversized talent.

Over the last decade-plus, the Cardinals is on a 14-straight losing season streak and haven’t won a playoff game since 1967.

Another high school is planned for a 2026 opening in the area.

This will likely drop Del Valle to a Class 5A distinction.
