A shockwave was sent across Texas high school football this week with the news that John Kay, the Head Coach of the North Shore Mustangs, is leaving high school football.

Kay has been involved in coaching in high school football for 27 years, with 25 of those years being at North Shore. He has been the Head Coach since 2014. Kay has a 117-18 record as a Head Coach, reaching the state title game 5 times and winning 4 state titles. This year, he led his team to the 6A D1 State Championship where they lost 21-28 to the Duncanville Panthers.

After 27 years in high school football, Kay will be joining the Rice Owls coaching stafff as a linebacker coach under Mike Bloomgren. Rice was 5-8 last year finishing 7th in Conference USA.

It is expected that North Shore will promote someone from their current coacing staff to Head Coach. In 2014, they promoted John Kay to Head Coach when David Aymond stepped down.
