UIL Limiting August Practices Due to Heat

Because of record-breaking heatwaves dehydrating the Lone Star State, TXHSFB teams will no longer endure two-a-day workouts the first week of August. Although Week 1 is only four Fridays from now, today marked the first day programs could get back on the practice field. Unlike the Allen Eagles, not every school has an indoor practice facility.

To minimize risk, the UIL has safety protocols in place to help student-athletes keep safe in the heat. According to the rules, the first five days of practice are an acclimatization period. During this time, no-full contact is allowed; if there is a two-a-day, the second practice must be a teaching/period walkthrough practice only.

Earlier this month, the UIL claimed that trying to keep players safe from the heat when practices start is its most pressing concern. All rules regarding heat safety were implemented after 17 heat stroke deaths transpired from 1995-2000. However, added emphasis by the UIL has been implemented since last January, when 20 Rockwall-Heath athletes were sent to the hospital due to rhabdomyolysis. Over the summer, the medical advisory committee has amended and updated its training on heat safety.

Guidelines include updated physical exams, mandated water breaks every ten minutes per half-hour, and an emphasis on education in prevention and safety. The UIL recommends student athletes drink water the night before practice, consume salty snacks and drinks for electrolytes, take regular breaks, and be alert for signs of heat exhaustion. Symptoms to be aware of include: headache, irritability, vomiting, and dizziness.

According to drought.gov, temperatures across Texas are 2 degrees Fahrenheit higher than it was during the 20th century, including record highs ever recorded. Temperatures across the state are expected to be over 100 degrees daily this week.
