Byron Nelson Beats Southlake Carroll For First Time Ever

Round Rock Hail Roof Inspection

In the battle of the undefeateds, the underdog inexplicably claimed an upset victory.

At Trophy Club, Byron Nelson shocked Southlake Carroll in a 34-17 victory, clinching the District 4-6A, Region IV title. Since 2009, it’s the first time that the Bobcats has ever defeated the Dragons. After two consecutive weeks scoring 70+ points, Southlake Carroll faltered for the first time in the season—their first loss in 38 straight district contests.

The biggest surprise were the struggles of Dragons quarterback Graham Knowles from the very start. Knowles boasted 1,600+ passing yards and 14 touchdowns last season and was responsible for the Dragons averaging 571.9 yards and 58 points per game coming into the contest. However, the defense was all over the Georgia Tech commit, intercepting three times, including a 27-yard pick six by Jacoven Julian that put the Bobcats up 27-3 in the third quarter.

Running back Tucker James led the Bobcats offense with 23 carries for 147 yards, including a 40+ yard touchdown run. In comparison, both Dragons’ running backs Riley Wormley and Davis Penn were held to a combined 72 yards and zero scores.

Despite winning only one game four years ago, Byron Nelson has been steadily improving, including an 8-0 start last season (before inevitably losing to Southlake Carroll). Now, the Bobcats are the top dogs of Class 6A Division II, while the Dragons have to settle for the No. 2 seed.

Next, Southlake Carroll will get a recovering game against Fossil Ridge (3-6). Byron Nelson will take on V.R. Eaton.
