Anna Coyotes Win First State Championship 26-0

Round Rock Hail Roof Inspection

The Anna Coyotes were making their first championship game appearance, with Head Coach Seth Parr looking to complete the turnaround at Anna. Anna was 3-7 in 2000, 7-3 in 2001, and then have put together back-to-back one-loss seasons. Tyler Chapel Hill was looking to bring their school their first state title since 2011. Head Coach Jeff Riordan went just 2-8 in his first season in 2019, but he has since taken the Bulldogs to back-to-back state semifinals in 2021 and 2022, and now to the state title game.

Anna got off to a dominating start. They effortlessly moved the ball down the field, and cashed in on an Edward Chumley 6-yard touchdown run to take a 7-o lead 8:37 into the first quarter. Chapel Hill went 3 and out on their first drive, and the high-powered Anna offense had the ball back. On the second Anna drive, the Bulldog defense made a few stops, forcing Anna into a 4th and 7. Anna went for it, and Ziondre Williams scrambled for a first down to the 11-yard line. The Bulldog defense again forced a 4th down, and Anna settled for a 22-yard field goal and a 10-0 lead with less than a minute to go in the first quarter.

Chapel Hill got a first down and moved the ball up to midfield, but failed to connect on a couple of deep balls and was forced to punt with 10:32 to go in the second quarter. Anna returned the punt all the way inside the 10-yard line on a 76-yard punt return from Jabari Finnie. Anna then faced a 4th and goal from the 2, and Chumley ran it in for his second touchdown to give Anna a 17-0 lead with 8:35 to go in the first half.

On the next Bulldog drive, Anna had a 17-yard sack, forcing another Chapel Hill punt. A few plays later, Anna scored on a screen pass to Chumley, his third touchdown in the first half. The next Chapel Hill drive was much the same, with the Bulldogs punting from their own endzone, but a great Punt put Anna back to midfield with 4:02 to go in the first half. However, the Bulldog defense stepped up and made their first stop of the game to force an Anna punt.

Multiple penalties cursed the next Chapel Hill drive, and again, they punted out of their own endzone. The punter could not catch the snap on the punt, and the ball went through the endzone for a safety to put Anna up 26-0 with 0:36 to go in the first half. Anna went 3 and out on their drive, and Chapel Hill completed one short pass to end the first half with the score at 26-0.

Second Half

Chapel Hill got the ball moving to start the second half, quickly getting to midfield with a few good runs from Demetrius Brisbon and two big third and long conversions. But a 7-yard sack on third down from inside the 20 cost the Bulldogs and forced a 4th and 18. They had to go for it, but Brisbon fumbled while scrambling to try to get the first down.

After Anna picked up two first downs on their first drive of the half, the Bulldog defense made a stop to get the ball back to Chapel Hill with 1:18 to go in the third quarter. The third quarter ended with neither team scoring, and both defenses looking solid. In the 4th quarter, Chapel Hill managed a 17-play drive, getting down inside the 10-yard line, but they were unable to convert on a 4th down from the 2-yard line.

Neither team could get the ball moving for the rest of the 4th quarter, and the second half was scoreless. 90 years after Anna started their football program, they won the state title. It is just the second state title in any sport for Anna. Their last title was in boys’ golf in 1968.

Final Score: Anna 26 / Chapel Hill 0
