Another High School Football Team Suspended for 2 Years
A few weeks ago, the Alto ISD football program was suspended from post season play for two years by the UIL. This week, the San Marcos football team received a two year postseason ban, this time from their own District 27-6A District Executive Committee. They are appealing the decision to the UIL, though the UIL is highly likely not to over-turn the decision of the committee.
The issue leading to the two year ban is that San Marcos is alleged to have several players on their roster that violated the transfer rules. The players were ruled inelgible for transfer for athletic reasons.
The UIL has been busy hearing several cases on player elgibiliy this month. They are expcted to be hearing and ruling on several other elgibility cases in the upcoming weeks. The San Marcos case stands out because it involved multiple players, all of which Athletic Director John Walsh said played together on a select youth football team.
In the Alto ISD case, the majority of our readers and social media followers felt that the 2 year ban was too severe of a punishment. However, with San Marcos also now facing a two year post season ban, a two year suspension may become the standard punishment for the more elevated cases.
As always, our thoughts and hearts go out to the San Marcos football players that have worked hard and won’t have the opportunity to experience post-season play. By all accounts, San Marcos has a group of great hard working kids in their program.
The Rattlers of San Marcos kick off their season Friday, the 26th, against Hutto. After just 4 wins total from 2018-2020, San Marcos went 5-6 last year and have a good chance this year for their first .500 or above season in a long time.
