Memorial High School’s graduation ceremony paused for a moment that went far beyond caps, gowns, and handshakes.
Austin Metcalf was a Memorial High School football player whose death in April 2025 shook the Frisco community and reached deeply into the Texas high school football world. He was killed after being stabbed during a track and field meet. The criminal trial connected to his death is scheduled to begin June 1.
Hunter Metcalf, Austin’s twin brother and a 2025 Texas HS Football Fan Vote 5A All-State Team selection, accepted Austin’s posthumous diploma during the May 21 ceremony at the Comerica Center in Frisco.
After walking the stage for his own diploma, Hunter returned moments later to receive Austin’s, drawing a long-standing ovation from the crowd.
Graduation is usually about what comes next. For Memorial, this moment was also about honoring what was lost. Austin’s diploma represented more than completed coursework. It represented a teammate, a brother, a classmate, and a life that still matters to the people who loved him.
On graduation night, Hunter stood for both brothers. And Memorial made sure Austin’s name was not forgotten.
