Former Austin Westlake quarterback Sam Ehlinger will make his first career start for the Texas Longhorns on Saturday against San Jose State. Previous starter Shane Buechele was ruled out earlier this afternoon after battling a shoulder injury all week, according to multiple reports. Former Denton Guyer quarterback now receiver Jerrod Heard will be the backup signal caller.

Ehlinger had been in a quarterback battle with Buechele (Arlington Lamar) over the offseason under head coach Tom Herman. The sophomore Buechele won the job but struggled at times last week in the loss to Maryland, where he went 34 for 52 for 372 yards and two touchdowns. He put up good numbers but had been scrambling to stay upright in the pocket.
Herman told The Dallas Morning News on Friday that Buechele would be a game-time decision. As the Longhorns look to bounce back against the Spartans, it looks like the former blue chip quarterback from Austin Westlake will get his shot.
