WACO, TX-The Baylor Bears (1-10,1-7) put up a good fight on Senior Day, but Iowa State managed to impede on the festivities. The Cyclones (7-4,5-3) were able to outscore Baylor 10-3 in the second quarter and 3-0 in the fourth quarter and seal the Bears fate 23-13 in their final home game at McLane Stadium for 2017.
The Bears were looking to head into halftime tied 10-10, but with just over two minutes left in the second quarter, Iowa State quarterback Zeb Noland spotted Hakeem Butler behind the Baylor secondary on a seam route. Butler managed to pull the pass in with one hand and break two tackles on his way to the end zone and give the Cyclones a 17-10 lead headed into halftime.
Baylor was able to score first, as Charlie Brewer tossed Ish Wainwright the ball and the ex-basketball star ran for 13 yards for the touchdown, it was the second touchdown on the season for the converted senior tight end.
The Cyclones would go on to outscore Baylor 17-3 in the first half, behind arm of Zeb Noland and the foot of Owens. Noland connected with Alan Lazard on 36 yard touchdown pass to tie the game 7-7 during the first quarter. The touchdown made Lazard the Iowa State’s career leading receiver, breaking Todd Bylthe’s record of 3,096 yards.
The Bears were forced to settle on two field goals the rest of the game and Iowa State was able to snap a two game losing streak and secure their first bowl berth since the 2012 season. Baylor will be on the road next week, as they wrap the 2017 season up with rival TCU and Iowa State will travel to the “Little Apple” for a game against Kansas State.
