It has been a tumultuous time in Waco to say the least. After Art Briles was fired back in May, the class of 2017 began shrinking for the Bears. The Bears got off to a good start at 6-0, but have lost five straight games.
As Baylor gets set to wrap up the regular season at West Virginia on Saturday, the team is also trying to figure out who will be suiting up next year. As the season winds down, the Bears may not have much a recruiting class left.
Over the weekend, cornerback Noah Daniels of Clear Creek announced his decommittment from Baylor, leaving the Bears with just one commit for next year in Stafford’s Jalen Pitre. So where do the Bears turn from here?
First, it starts with figuring out who the head coach will be next year. Jim Grobe has already come out publicly and stated that the ‘program needs a fresh start.’ For a while, it looked like SMU’s Chad Morris would be the guy to take over. However, it seems that talk has cooled off. North Carolina’s Larry Fedora, Cal’s Sonny Dykes, and Tulsa’s Philip Montgomery are also considered to be candidates for the job, per the Waco Tribune-Herald.
Whoever does get the job will have a lot of work to do between now and National Signing Day on February 1st. Baylor does have talent still there and a bright future with quarterback Zach Smith and an offense that can still put up a lot of points. However, the Bears won’t have the same depth as the other Big 12 schools, which leaves them in a bad spot. With so much uncertainty in the program, no one knows what the future holds for the Baylor Bears football team.
What helps Baylor is the opportunity to play right away and create their own legacy, as Jalen Pitre said in an interview earlier Tuesday. But who will step in to that spot after so much turmoil in 2016? Only time will tell.
