Bowie Jackrabbits Host Boyd in District Opener, Seek Turnaround

BOWIE, Texas — Teams entering district play all across Texas this week look for one of two goals: To utilize what was learned during the non-district portion and continue the momentum into the games that really matter, or to turn over a new leaf, revitalize themselves and seek a playoff push.

With both Bowie and Boyd enduring rough non-district schedules, the district opener at Jackrabbit Stadium may go a long way in determining the way forward. Both teams took on quality teams in decent performances, but were left bruised on the win-loss record.
Both teams played a solid Henrietta squad close, but came up short.

Bowie led by as much as 19 points in their week three contest, but came up short in overtime, while Boyd led the Bearcats by one at the half in their week four contest, but fell 48-35. Bowie enters their 4-3A DI opener fresh from their bye week, having dropped a 38-21 contest to Jacksboro the week prior. Boyd also enters this contest off a loss to the upstart Tigers, dropping to 2-3 with last week’s 28-13 loss.

Matthew Wallace is settling in to his role as the signal-caller for the Jackrabbits, completing 40 passes for 450 yards and a pair of touchdowns so far in 2017. Most of Bowie’s scoring has come from the ground, where Wallace also contributes a good amount with eight rushing touchdowns on the season.

Boyd’s passing game has been solid so far, namely Kody Risenhoover; the junior quarterback has so far racked up 823 yards and nine touchdowns on 67 completions. He’s joined in the backfield by running back Russell Jones, the senior has rushed for 432 yards and three touchdowns in five games.

With a dynamic backfield duo coming to town, Bowie’s defense may need more tuning, as the unit has so far allowed 34 points per game — but at the same time, the Yellowjacket offense has scored only 20.4 points per game in 2017. The Jackrabbits have gained the upper hand on Boyd, winning the last three contests; the last two of which the Bowie defense held their opponent to just a touchdown in each. However is this the season Boyd earns their first winning record since 2012, or can the Jackrabbits get things turned around at the right time?
