Bussey Leads Timpson to First State Title

Round Rock Hail Roof Inspection

The Timpson Bears and Tolar Rattlers both came into the 2A Divison 1 State Championship looking to win the first state title in the history of their school.

The main attraction in this game was Texas A&M commit, Terry Bussey. Bussey got to work quickly. On the Timpson opening drive, Bussey hit Colton Carroll for a 43-yard touchdown and a 7-0 Timson lead.

On the next drive, Tolar’s drive looked to stall out, but a conversion on a fake punt gave their drive new life inside Timpson territory. However, the Timpson defense held strong and forced Tolar to punt the ball back to Timpson. On the next drive, Timpson got stopped on 4th down, and Tolar got the ball back to end the first quarter.

Tolar got the ball inside Timpson territory again, but again was unable to sustain their drive and punted. The punt was great, and pined Timpson back to the 3-yard line.

Backed up at their own 3-yard line, Busey threw a slant to Carcorian Johnson, who took it 97 yards for a touchdown. It was the longest touchdown pass and reception in UIL State Championship history. Timpson took a 14-0 lead.

On the next drive, Tolar again drove to midfield before getting stopped. Again, they punted and backed Timpson up inside their 10-yard line. Backed up at their 7-yard line, the explosive Bears offense struck again with Bussey breaking free down the sideline, then cutting back across the field to score on a 93-yard touchdown run to give Timpson a 21-0 lead going into halftime.

At the half, Bussey had 197 yards passing, 147 yards rushing, and 3 touchdowns.

Second Half

The Tolar Rattlers surprised Timpson with an on-side kick to start the second half, and recovered it. They then put the ball in the hands of their QB, Issac Blessing, and he powered the ball down the field, and scored to cut the lead to 21-7 with 8:10 to go in the third.

The Rattlers seemed to have taken back momentum, but it was short-lived. On the kickoff, Amari Bruton took the kickoff back for a touchdown, and pushed the lead back to 21. Tolar started to move the ball on their next drive, but Timpson forced an interception and ran it back 49 yards inside the 10-yard line. One play later, Bussey scored on a touchdown run to push the lead to 35-7.

It was all Timpson for the rest of the second half. Their defense broke through the Tolar offensive line on almost every play, and Tolar could only manage a couple of yards every few plays.

To cap the state championship off, Busey hit Johnson again for a 44-yard touchdown, then connected with Amari Bruton on the next drive for Bussey’s 4th touchdown pass, giving Timpson a 49-7 lead.

Final Score: Tolar: 7 / Timpson 49

Bussey would end the game with over 300 yards passing, over 150 yards rushing, and 6 total touchdowns. He was our Texas HS Football MVP and the UIL Offensive MCP.

The UIL Defensive MVP was Tyler Lane.
