Celebrating the Boerne Greyhounds

The Boerne Greyhounds football program has experienced a tremendous turnaround. Since going 2-8 in 2013, the Greyhounds have had 9 consecutive winning seasons. Under Head Coach Che Hendrix, now 50-13 at Boerne, 9-3 seasons have become the norm. But, even with the winning seasons, and 25 playoff appearances, Boerne has not been able to reach the state final, until this year.
On December 9, Boerne beat Chapel Hill, 35-0, to reach its first-ever state championship game. And, late in the second quarter, up 21-0 on China Spring in the 4A D1 UIL State Championship game, the Greyhounds looked like they were about to be State Champs.
However, the China Spring Cougars made an unbelievable comeback, and a Cougars field goal from Thomas Barr gave China Spring the 24-21 win and the state title. But, the Boerne Greyhounds football team deserves to be celebrated.
The Greyhounds took an undefeated record into the state title game, having outscored their opponents 44-12 on average, and their playoff opponents by an average of 45 to 10. They held 8 of their opponents to 7 points or less. They were 5-0 in district play, winning the District 14-4 Division championships.
The Greyhounds were led by the Baize brothers. Senior WR Braden Baize had 70 catches, 1,297 yards, and 24 total touchdowns. Sophomore QB Jaxon Baize threw for 3,575 yards with 57 total touchdowns.
Another standout for the Greyhounds this year was Junior T.J. Dement, who rushed for over 1,000 yards and added over 500 yards receiving and 19 total touchdowns. With Dement back next year, QB Jaxon Baize, and other talented returning players like Brooks Perez, Boerne should be one of the favorites to win the state title next year.
