China Spring Runs Past Mexia, 69-27
The China Spring Cougars (2-1) rolled into Mexia to face the Blackcats (0-3) wanting to get rid of the unfamiliar taste of a loss out of their mouth. Both sides of the ball quickly showed they were ready to get back to their winning ways.
Mexia chose to receive the opening kickoff and proceeded to go three and out with the help of a big sack by DL Greydon Grimes. The Cougars took over on their own 26 and RB Kyle Barton made a statement on the first play from scrimmage. A great block by G Jaydon Hogan opens a hole for Barton as he goes untouched for 74 yards for the score, the first of Barton’s four touchdowns on the evening. China Spring never looked back.
The next series for Mexia was worse than a three and out. DB Ryan Hale picked off the first of his two interceptions from Mexia QB Brett Swift to set up China Spring near midfield. On the third play of the drive, QB Cash McCollum finds WR Cameron Campos down the sideline for the 41 yard score. With just four minutes gone off the clock, China Spring was up by 14.
New Faces Making Plays
With WR Greyson Martin in street clothes on the sideline, a new name came into the Cougar offensive fold. WR Kaden Dumas stepped into the slot vacated by Martin and made the most of his opportunity. Dumas pulled in 10 receptions for 97 yards, including a 22 yard touchdown reception, earning him Player of the Game honors. Dumas was able to take the ball in the flat and work through the Blackcat defense for hard earned yardage.
Blackcat Running Backs
While the Blackcat offense was held in check most of the game RBs Steven Milus and Marteyveon Simms were able to break away for a few big runs. Milus’ first carry barely made it back to the line of scrimmage, but his second carry matched Barton’s 74 yard touchdown run, the longest carry for each team on the evening. Simms added a 19 yard rushing touchdown.
Second Half – Second Team
The second teams on both sides for the Cougars saw a lot of action in the second half. The Cougars, working to keep the clock running, stayed on the ground. WR/QB Matthew Battles and RB Noah Guerrero both put the ball in the endzone. Guerrero on a 25 yard rush and Battles on a 40 yard QB draw.
Next Up
The Cougars will host the rival Connally Cadets (3-0) for Homecoming next Friday. Connally is coming off impressive wins over La Vega and Cameron. Connally traveled to Mexia in week one and defeated the Blackcats 64-13.
