The UIL has suspended Palestine Westwood head coach Richard Bishop for the remainder of the 2024 season following allegations of videotaping opponents’ signals during scouting.
Additionally, Donald McCoy, a district technology assistant, has been suspended from all UIL activities for the rest of the school year. Bishop has also received a public reprimand and two years of probation, with his family reportedly exploring further legal options.
The big news is that UIL’s state executive committee also ruled that Westwood will not forfeit any District 9-3A DI games. This is a reversal of the district’s original decision to have Westwood forfeit all previous district games played this season and the remaining district games. With the district wins still in place, the 7-0 Panthers are in an excellent position to make a 3A Division 1 playoff run.
According to an announcement on social media, Palestine Westwood has named Glen Tunstall as the interim head coach. Here is the statement from the IDS:
“With extensive experience and a deep commitment to our program’s values and goals, Coach Tunstall brings leadership and expertise to this role,” according to the district. “We look forward to his guidance and support as we continue to pursue excellence.”
