There won’t be rides or Fletcher’s Corny Dogs at fair park this year, but Texas Athletics Director Chris Del Conte said there will still be pancake blocks and touchdowns.
Despite Tuesday’s news that the State Fair of Texas was cancelled, Del Conte released a statement saying that the Texas Longhorns and Oklahoma Sooners still plan to kickoff off at the Cotton Bowl.
“Though we certainly respect and understand the decision of the folks in Dallas on their cancellation of this year’s State Fair of Texas, we fully anticipate that our annual Red River Showdown with Oklahoma will be played in the Cotton Bowl and were continuing to prepare for that,” the statement read. “We know the decision to cancel the fair was an extremely difficult one for everyone involved and that we all are dealing with the very fluid situation during this unprecedented time.”
The Cotton Bowl is on the grounds of the Texas State Fair and has hosted the Red River Showdown since 1929. The fair has served as an event around the game where both Longhorn and Sooner fans enjoy fried food, petting zoos and more before and after the game.
Texas-Oklahoma is currently scheduled to be played on Oct. 10 with the kickoff time yet to be announced. Texas leads the all-time series 62-48-5, a record that includes a Sooner victory in the 2018 Big 12 Championship Game at AT&T Stadium in Arlington.
Oklahoma beat Texas 34-27 last October in a game that saw Jalen Hurts (Channelview) threw for 235 yards and three touchdowns while rushing for 131 yards and another score while Texas’ Sam Ehlinger (Austin Westlake) threw for 210 yards.
