DeSoto Blows Out Miller, Dashes Coastal Bend Hopes

Tom Thumb - DFW's Grocer Since 1948

For the first time in history, a Coastal Bend team took on a two-time defending state champion at the highest classification.

When Miller scheduled the non-district DeSoto contest in the spring, the team was riding the high from a fourth round ousting against Brownsville Veterans Memorial—their farthest berth in the postseason since a state semifinals appearance in 1963.

It was a tough assignment.

DeSoto showcased their winning ways on both sides of the ball against Miller in a non-district contest, defeating the Buccaneers 57-21 at the Alamodome in San Antonio.

Miller suffered the first loss of their season against an Eagles squad that scored on every other possession through the first three quarters.

The Buccaneers didn’t get on the board until halfway through the third quarter, when running Broderick Taylor broke away with a 61-yard run. The senior Buccaneers running back was a standout, scoring all three of Miller’s touchdown; he finished the game with 135 yards receiving and 117 yards rushing.

Coming into the contest, the Buccaneers had outscored their first two opponents of the season by a combined score of 100-13. The offense tried their hardest, but faced numerous hurdles, even behind quarterback Trevor Long’s 309 yards passing.

Miller got inside the red zone four times in which they didn’t finish the drive.

DeSoto entered the matchup with vengeance on their mind, looking to righten their season after last week’s upset loss to North Crowley. The depth of their offense flexed its muscle, with four different backs accounting for over 50 years in the first half alone.

Miller will travel to face Cuero next Friday. DeSoto will continue pursuing their three-peat and will host Mesquite in their first District 11-6A contest of the season.
