Baker Mayfield and Dede Westbrook have been a dynamic duo for the Oklahoma Sooners this season. The native Texans have played a pivotal role en route to yet another Big 12 conference title and a 10-win season. Now, in their final game together as college teammates, Mayfield and Westbrook will try to put on one final show against the Auburn Tigers in the Sugar Bowl.
Westbrook finished with 74 receptions for 1,465 yards and 16 touchdowns. The former Cameron Yoe receiver has also scored in nine straight games and became the first Sooner to win the Biletnikoff Award.
As for his quarterback, Mayfield finished with nearly 3,700 yards passing and 38 touchdowns. On top of all that, the Lake Travis quarterback finished with an NCAA record 197.8 passing efficiency rating during the regular season.
Westbrook is a redshirt senior, so this will be his final college game. Mayfield could have left as well but announced after the Oklahoma State game that he would return for his senior season.
Earlier this month, the duo was invited to New York as Heisman finalists and finished third and fourth in the voting respectively. They became the first pair of teammates to be invited to the ceremony since Reggie Bush and Matt Leinart from USC in 2005.
As they enter Monday night’s game against Auburn, they will face a Tigers defense with a tough defensive line and an improved secondary from a year ago. The key for the Sooners will be the ability to break open the big play and the big plays often start with those two.
It’s been a long journey for the Sooners after a 1-2 start, but both players mentioned this week how important a win would be in their final game together. Oklahoma takes on Auburn at 7:30 p.m. Central time from New Orleans.
