District 1-6A has proven to be a wild, roller coaster ride this season with so many games turning into shootouts. The matchup between the El Paso Franklin Cougars and the El Paso El Dorado Aztecs looks to be no different as they will face off Thursday night at the SAC in a pivotal matchup for both teams. Both teams enter Thursday’s game at 2-1 in district play, and a win would put either team in a good position to clinch a playoff spot heading into the homestretch of the regular season.

Franklin is 2-4 this season, but those who follow the Cougars would tell you that they’re a better team than their record indicates. After three very challenging games against Midland High, Odessa Permian, and Copperas Cove to start the year, Franklin has been able to put together a 2-1 start in district play. Last Friday, the Cougars were on the wrong end of a shootout against El Paso Montwood, falling 56-48 at home. But, they bring a load of talent for a team that’s averaging 50 points in district play.

Quarterback Kaleb Hatch leads the Cougars offense that has played much better in three games. After struggling to produce any offense in their first three games, Hatch has thrown 11 touchdown passes in district play. He will have a number of receivers to get the ball to, including Eric Phillips, a versatile weapon who is second on the team in rushing and receiving yards. Luis Baca and sophomore Khatib Lyles both have big-play ability and both of them will be needed to keep up with the Aztecs. Finally, running back Seth Dominguez is the go-to workhorse of the offense. Look for him to be a big part of the Cougars’ game plan.

On the other side, the Aztecs rebounded nicely last week with a win over Socorro after being upset by Montwood two weeks ago. But, there are two questions surrounding the Aztecs entering this game. First, what is the status of star quarterback Cedarious Barfield? He missed last week’s game and had been struggling with an ankle injury suffered in the game against Eastwood. If he’s able to go, he provides a dual threat that the Aztecs look to utilize. If not, receiver Jacob Hernandez would fill in at quarterback. No matter who starts, they’ll have Tyquez Hampton to the throw ball to. Hampton made news earlier this week when he switched his verbal commitment from Washington State to Utah.

Second, can the Aztecs step up defensively? The Cougars offense provides a good test to the second question. El Dorado held Socorro to 12 points, but have struggled to stop explosive offenses in Eastwood and Montwood. This game may provide a good test for El Dorado moving forward, as the Aztecs have to face district leader Americas next Friday night at the SAC.

It should be another fun game at the SAC. If recent history shows us anything, you should prepare for a game with lots of points and even a touch of #TXHSFBAfterDark.
