Entering Thursday’s game, Pebble Hills head coach Mark Torres felt his Spartans team was more comfortable in their surroundings. When all was said and done, the Spartans made quick work of the Irvin Rockets with a 55-7 blowout

Speed is a strength of our team,” Torres said. “We have a lot of guys who can do good things for us and make things happen for us. We try to get all of them the ball. It makes it fun as well for them. I thought our effort was tremendous from the start.”

Pebble Hills got off to a fast start, thanks to a quick drive capped off by a six-yard touchdown from Caleb Gerber. After a forced fumble on the Rockets’ ensuing drive, the Spartans took even less time scoring on a four-yard strike from quarterback Orlando Puig to receiver Justin Wolfe.

But from that point on, it simply was the Caleb Gerber show. Showing off his verstality, the junior all-purpose back would add another touchdown in the second quarter to make it 28-0.

He would follow up with a five-yard second quarter touchdown run that put the Spartans up ahead 35-0. He made an impact in more ways than one, finishing with 113 yards rushing, 69 total return yards and 13 yards receiving all in the first half.

Spartans head coach Mark Torres knows that Gerber will be a key part of the offense in 2017 and said that his breakout game was a credit to his work ethic.

“Caleb is a class act and he’s worked hard to become better in everything he does. “He’s a smart kid and he’s going to get better.”

Overall, it was an impressive opening statement for the Spartans entering their second-year of varsity play. They’ll get a much stiffer test next week when they host District 1-5A favorite Andress on September 7. Pebble Hills will enjoy this win but knows that their work is far from over.

“We just have to continue to work hard and continue to stay humble,” Gerber said. “We did a lot of good things against Irvin but we can still be better in what we do.”
