How Far Can the Katy Tigers Go?

This time last year the Tigers were 10-0 and had allowed just 18 points all regular season, and were easily the best team in 6A. This year has been a little different. The Tigers are in the 6A Region 3 Division 1 bracket this year and could possibly have the toughest road to the championship game.

The Tigers allowed more points in their first three games this year than they did all of last year, including the playoffs. If Katy hadn’t converted on a two-point conversion against Klein Collins in double overtime the Tigers would’ve started 0-3. While the non-district schedule for the Tigers was extremely difficult, it showed just how young and inexperienced this team was, especially on the defensive side of the ball.

The Tigers cruised through district, allowing just 36 points in seven games, and beating opponents by an average margin of 47 points. Most people expected Katy to win district without any real competition like they did, but what Katy team will we get in the playoffs?

The playoffs are where every great team is judged, and how they will be remembered. If Katy wants to make it to state, they will have to get by a very good passing team averaging over 300 yards in the air in Fort Bend Travis. In the Area Round they could potentially face undefeated Cy-Ranch, who they beat last year 59-20. The Mustangs scored the most points the Tigers allowed all year on that great defense, but this Katy defense isn’t as great as last year’s, so that could be a problem for the Tigers. In round three, if they make it that far, could face North Shore, Alief Taylor or Dickinson. All three are ranked in our TexasHSFootball 6A Power Rankings.

Those games are just in their half of the region. Teams like Ridge Point, Clear Springs and Lamar are on the other half of the region. For Katy to even make it back to the state championship game they will have to be on their a-game, but whoever makes it out of Region Three will undoubtedly have a great chance to win the whole thing, and rightfully so. Which team will show up for playoffs; the young defense that allowed 104 points in three games or the one that allowed 36 points in seven games? That question will soon be answered as the tough road to Dallas starts now.
