It’s been an up-and-down start to the season for Texas high school football. Austin Westlake beat Katy in week one, but lost Sam Ehlinger to injury. Cedar Hill gets blown out on national television just to get trolled later by Bishop Gorman quarterback and Texas A&M de-commit Tate Martell.
That was just Week One. Week Two brought even more intrigue.
Cedar Hill had to score three fourth quarter touchdowns to comeback against Mansfield. Desoto throttled Denton Guyer by 34 in the “Shawn Robinson Bowl.” Not to mention in 3A, both Waskom and Canadian had 30-plus game winning streaks snapped.
Unfortunately, I’ve barely scratched the surface. But here are the five things to watch in week two of Texas high school football.
How fitting is it that these teams are scheduled to face each other in week three? It seems as if both squads are going through the same mini-crisis. Cedar Hill quarterback and Notre Dame commit Avery Davis was unable to play against Mansfield and is a “game-time decision” for this week. Mesquite Horn quarterback Chris Robison and Oklahoma commit was injured in week one and the Jaguars have been forced to lean on sophomore Jermaine Givens. This could quite possibly be the battle of backups.
There are some interesting inter-class battles this week. 6A Euless Trinity plays the 5A Colleyville Heritage Panthers. Next, we have our TexasHSFootball.com Game of the Week, with a 4A China Spring team playing the 3A Cameron Yoe Yoemen. There are definitely some bragging rights are on the line.
This is an intriguing matchup between two 2-0 teams. Coppell has gotten off to a strong start with wins against LD Bell and McKinney Boyd. Meanwhile, Allen has shown their defensive class with two wins against tough out-of-state opponents. The Eagles defense has only allowed 17 points. Knowing that, it’ll be tough for Cowboys’ junior quarterback Brady McBride and the offense to manufacture points.
It’s been 739 days since the Bremond Tigers lost a football game. But with both Canadian and Waskom ending their respective winning streaks, could it be their time? Highly unlikely, the Tigers are scheduled to play against a 0-3 Milano side on Sept 9 and will likely keep it rolling. Definitely keep an eye out on this team. I don’t see their winning streak coming to an end anytime soon.
The Argyle Eagles are set to receive their 4A Lone Star Cup trophy on Friday, Sept. 2 against the Celina Bobcats. The Lone Star Cup trophy is awarded annually to the top team in each classification (1A-6A) who does the best throughout district and state competitions across a wide spectrum of sports. The winning school in each classification is awarded a $1,000 scholarship. Oh, and it should be a good game too. Celina is looking to get back on track from a rough Week One start,
