Texas high school football is mourning the loss of a former coach and athlete after a deadly shooting in McAllen, Texas. Ismael Chavez and his fellow officer Edelmiro Garza were tragically killed when responding to a domestic violence report.
Chavez played football as a high school athlete on the ’99 Edinburg squad where he helped lead the team to the Class 5A state semifinals with an 11-4 record. From there, he attended college at the University of Texas at San Antonio.
After college, Chavez spent nine years teaching science and coaching a variety of sports- including football- for Weslaco High School. As an assistant coach at Weslaco, Chavez coached under two head coaches- Tony Villareal and Jim Hite- helping post an overall of 78-41 record in his time with the team. Chavez became a police officer in 2017.
