It’s well known that football is the king of sports in Texas, and there is no shortage of teams to watch. From high school to the NFL, it’s easy for us to get our football fix, but what is the best level?
It would be easy to say the NFL is best. Extravagant stadiums, well known logos and more importantly great athletes. We all know only the best of the best make it that far. However, even with all of the positives, pro-ball is far from the best. Multi-million dollar contracts and endorsements have ruined the game. With millions on the line, players hold back due to the fear of injury. It’s no longer a game, it’s a job in a multi-billion dollar industry. As with any job, even if you enjoy what you do, the paycheck will eventually become your primary reason for doing it.
In many ways college has gone a similar route. Fancy stadiums and top-notch players make it desirable for many fans. Unfortunately, it also suffers from similar problems. Again, big money has become detrimental to the game. Players seem to put more effort into their game play, but with obvious caution due to the hope of getting a large NFL contract.
High school is where it all begins. Only 6.8 percent of high school players will go on to play in the NCAA- this includes all three NCAA divisions. With such a low percentage, few high school players expect to play at the next level. Because of this, they play for the best reason- they love the game.
It’s not uncommon to see kids strap on pads week after week even when they know an 0-10 season is likely. These kids give everything they have for their team, school and fans. Their passion for the game and undying determination makes high school football the best level of football in Texas.
There is argument about the best level of high school football, but I’ll save that for another time.
