Houston Lamar product Grant Delpit, other talented defensive backs conclude combine

Former Texas High School Football stars will have the most important job interview of their careers this week at the NFL Combine.

In the fourth and final story or our NFL Combine series, TexasHSFootball.com takes a look at these prospects.

A talented group of Texans will close out the Combine on Sunday and showcase the athletic abilities that will hopefully make them shutdown defensive backs in the NFL. Day 4 of the Combine begins at 1 p.m. on the NFL Network.

Grant Delpit, Houston Lamar, LSU
Delpit brought home plenty of hardware as a junior at LSU by being named the Thorpe Award winner in December then helping the Tigers conclude a perfect season with a College Football Playoff National Championship weeks later.
He had two interceptions, a forced fumble, 65 tackles, two sacks and 4.5 tackles or loss in 2019 and played his best in LSU’s biggest game.
In the CFP Championship Game, Delpit helped end any threat of a Clemson comeback by forcing Clemson quarterback Trevor Lawrence to fumble the football after a 10-yard gain. Derek Stingley recovered the fumble with 3:53 remaining LSU ran out the clock and get the party started in New Orleans.
He ended the game with six tackles. Before he electrified the Superdome, Delpit was a star at Houston Lamar and transferred to the IMG Academy in Florida for his senior year in high school.

Jeff Okudah, South Grand Prairie, Ohio State
Okudah helped the Buckeyes win the Big 10 Championship and make it to the CFP Semifinals by posting 29 solo tackles, two forced fumbles and three interceptions in 2019.
Before he was as star in Columbus, Okudah stood out at South Grand Prairie where he was a U.S. Army All-American and was 247Sports’ No. 1 defensive back recruit.

 J.R. Reed, Prestonwood Christian, Georgia
Southeastern Conference coaches honored Reed with a selection to their all-conference first team in 2019 after he had 59 tackles, including two for loss and an interception.
Reed helped Prestonwood Christian make a state championship game appearance.

Antoine Winfield, The Woodlands, Minnesota
Windfield helped the Golden Gophers finish with an Associated Press Top 10 ranking by leading the team with 88 tackles. He also had three sacks and 3.5 tackles for loss.
He was a three-year letterman at The Woodlands.

Grayland Arnold, Kountz, Baylor
Arnold had a career-high six interceptions and 46 tackles as a senior at Baylor. He helped the Bears bounce back in 2019 by making it to the Big 12 Championship Game for the first time in school history.
Arnold was a Class 3A, Division I All-State first team selection in 2015.

Chris Miller, Frisco Lone Star, Baylor
Miller had 76 tackles, including 2.5 for loss, to help Baylor finish as the Big 12’’s runner-up. He was an all-state cornerback and three-time all-district selection at Lone Star.

Brandon Jones, Nacogdoches, Texas
Texas is often referred to as DBU and Jones is this year’s defensive back hope for Longhorn fans. Jones played in 42 games for Texas, made 31 starts and had two interceptions and 86 tackles as a senior in 2019.
Jones was an Under Armour All-American, two-time all-state and two-time all-district selection at Nacogdoches.

A.J. Green, Desoto, Oklahoma State
The Thorpe Award semifinalist and second team all-Big 12 selection had six interceptions during his collegiate career. Green’s only interception as a senior was returned for a 27-yard touchdown and he amassed 49 tackles in 2019.
Green was an all-state honorable mention and all-district first team player as both a sophomore and senior at Desoto.

Jeff Gladney, New Boston, TCU
Gladney had 31 tackles and an interception for the Horned Frogs in 2019. He was named the District 7-3A Most Valuable Player as a senior at New Boston.

Rodney Clemons, Katy Taylor, SMU
Clemons helped the Mustangs get back into the national spotlight by finishing with a 10-3 record. He had 78 tackles in 2019.
At Taylor, Clemons was a second team all-state selection.

Reggie Robinson II, Cleburne, Tulsa
Robinson II finished the season with 38 tackles, four interceptions and two fumble recoveries in 2019.
At Cleburne, Robinson II was a three-year letterman.
