Hurricane Harvey Forces Houston Football To Relocate Practice To Austin

With Hurricane Harvey set to make landfall this weekend near the Texas coastline, the Houston Cougars have temporarily moved their football operations from Houston to Austin and the Texas campus due to Hurricane Harvey.

The latest weather reports indicate that Harvey is now a Category 3 Hurricane and is expected to make landfall near Corpus Christi either late Friday or early Saturday.

In a statement, UH athletic director Hunter Yurachek said that the plan in place was to use the practice facilities at Texas through the weekend and possibly into early next week. Yurachek said they had offers from Baylor, SMU, and TCU to use their facilities.

“Because of hotel accommodations in some of those locations and the proximity of those locations, we decided in the end to relocate our football team, at least for the weekend and maybe early into next week, into Austin and practice at the facilities at the University of Texas,” he said.

The temporary relocation will be a reunion of sorts for Tom Herman, who spent the last two seasons coaching at Houston before being hired for the same position at Texas. The man who took over, former offensive coordinator Major Applewhite, will also be heading to his alma mater. Applewhite released a statement thanking The University of Texas for their hospitality and to keep everyone in Houston in their thoughts and prayers.

Houston is scheduled to host UTSA on Saturday, September 2.
