Hurricane Havoc: Week 1 Postponements in East Texas

Mother Nature Forcing Week 1 Postponements in East Texas

After a long summer of uncertainty, some schools are going to have to wait at least another week before they hit the gridiron thanks to Mother Nature.

There are two storms in the Gulf that have led several schools to cancel both school and their football games for this week. First, a weakening Tropical Storm Marco is expected to bring its rains to East Texas on Wednesday after an expected landfall southeast of New Orleans likely late Monday.

Right behind Marco is a strengthening Tropical Storm Laura. Laura is expected to make landfall either very late Wednesday or early Thursday as a potential Category 2 hurricane near the Texas-Louisiana border, a concerning forecast that is the driving force behind these cancellations.

As reported by KBMT Sports Director Ashly Elam and DCTF’s Matt Stepp, here are the games that have currently been cancelled:

-West Orange-Stark vs. Waco La Vega (4A)

-Hamshire-Fannett at Little Cypress-Mauriceville (4A)

-Buna at Bridge City ([email protected])

-Orangefield at Anahuac ([email protected])

-Deweyville at West Hardin (2A)

-Jasper at Lumberton (4A)

-Coldspring-Oakhurst at Hardin-Jefferson ([email protected])

-Kountze at Hardin (3A)

-Newton at Woodville (3A)

-West Rusk vs. East Chambers (3A)

-Sealy at Brazosport (4A)

And with Sabine Pass ISD and Vidor ISD also postponing school for the week, there is a very good chance that additional games will be added to that list, especially if Laura takes a more westward track closer to Houston, as schools and communities try to keep their students and citizens safe.

Football becomes an afterthought and public safety becomes the primary concern in situations like these when Mother Nature is involved. With these two tropical systems in the Gulf, this will be a storyline to continue to watch as the week progresses and the tracks and impacts of these storms become clearer.
