Hutto’s Chase Griffin Looking To Build On Promising Sophomore Season

When we collectively think of schools that great quarterbacks come from, we don’t often think of Hutto. Some think of Katy and the relentless perfectionism of old school prep heroes like Andy Dalton and Bo Levi Mitchell. Others immediately leap to Southlake Carroll and its history of explosive passing games with Chase Daniel, Riley Dodge, and Kenny Hill. There’s something to be said for Allen as well, seeing as how they produced Kyler Murray, the statistical best Texas high school quarterback of all time.

No, when the name Hutto is mentioned, not many think of incredible, fantastic quarterbacks. If you go watch Chase Griffin, though, your mind might be changed.

“It was really just a blessing to have the opportunity to come out as a sophomore,” says Griffin. “At this point we’re so close to next season that I’m really just thinking about how I can build off of that and have a much better year this year.”

His numbers from last year are staggering, 3,000+ yards and 31 touchdowns is nothing to sneeze at, especially when done in only 11 games. The Austin American-Statesman’s All-Centex Newcomer Of The Year has the Hippos riding high and looking very seriously at a deep playoff run in 2017.

“The number one thing I worked on this offseason was mobility…I’m just cleaning up my reads, getting better as a passer, really just becoming a better quarterback,” said Griffin.

On the topic of a playoff run, Griffin lays out the strategy. “It just takes us coming together as a team. We’re better on that front this year, if I do my job we’ll be better, and my work this offseason will definitely transfer over and I know my teammates have been working very hard. Overall, I know it’s a cliché, but hard work will pay off.”

The Hippos and Griffin open the 2017 season at Bryan on September 1st.
