Jason Richters is staying in Andrews, but now he gets the big chair.
Andrews ISD announced Richters as the Mustangs’ next head football coach, promoting him after he served as defensive coordinator under Tom Harvey. Harvey stepped down after four seasons leading Andrews, then accepted the athletic director and head football coaching job at Jal High School in New Mexico.
It gives Andrews a familiar leader instead of a full reset. Richters already knows the players, the staff, the expectations and the community. That matters for a program coming off a strange but promising 2025 season.
The Mustangs finished 5-6 overall last year, but they were perfect when it mattered most in district play. Andrews went 3-0 against district opponents, claimed another district title and positioned itself to chase a third straight district championship in 2026.
Harvey leaves after posting a 23-24 record with the Mustangs. Before taking over as head coach, he also served as defensive coordinator under former Andrews head coach Ralph Mason, making Richters’ promotion part of a familiar program path.
In a statement shared by Andrews ISD, Richters said it was an honor to be named head coach and thanked his family, the administration, school board and community for the opportunity.
He also made clear what he wants the program to become. Richters said the Mustangs will be built on discipline, toughness, accountability and love for one another, with an emphasis on representing Andrews well beyond Friday nights.
That is always the real test with an internal hire. The transition is smoother, but the expectations do not shrink. Richters does not have to introduce himself to Andrews. Now he has to put his own stamp on the program.
For the Mustangs, the goal is simple. Keep the district momentum rolling, build on the foundation already in place and turn a 5-6 team with a perfect district record into a more complete contender.
As Richters put it in his message to the community, now it’s time to go to work.
“Run at ’em.”
