Jason Witten Leads Liberty Christian to TAPPS Title
Cowboys Legend Jason Witten Guides Liberty Christian to Flawless Season
Liberty Christian won their school’s first title since 2007… and it was all thanks to one former Dallas Cowboys tight end.
Coach Jason Witten patrolled the sidelines as his Liberty Christian took down Regents 52-10 to secure the TAPPS Division II state championship in Waco. In his third season with the team, Liberty Christian attained a 14-0 record, leading to their championship title.
The road to championship glory wasn’t the easiest. Weeks after announcing his retirement from football after 17 seasons, Witten was named Liberty Christian’s head coach. The team went 2-8 in his first season, though they improved to 10-2 last year. This year, the program obliterated everyone they faced, outscoring opponents 716-96; the closest margin of victory was a whopping 28 points.
In the TAPPS Division II state championship game, junior running back Chase Garnett scored three touchdowns on 23 carries for 185 yards. UConn quarterback commit Cole Weller passed for three touchdowns, totaling 3,082 passing yards and 50 touchdowns on the year. Witten’s two sons on the team also made an impact all year; junior CJ accounted for 84 tackles, while freshman Cooper had 58.
It was coach Witten’s first championship; he never won a title in college at Tennessee or in the NFL.
“I have been dreaming for this moment since I was 12 years old, and I’m 41 now,” Witten told the Fort Worth Star-Telegram. “Can’t say enough about this team, the coaches, the fans. Just incredibly proud.”
