Karmelo Anthony Found Guilty of Murder

Karmelo Anthony has been found guilty of murder in the April 2025 stabbing death of Austin Metcalf, ending the trial phase of one of the most painful stories tied to Texas high school sports.

Anthony and Metcalf were both Texas high school football players. Metcalf played at Frisco Memorial. Anthony attended Frisco Centennial. The case dominated discussion across Texas high school football online communities because two young athletes, two families, and two school communities were forever changed.

The verdict was read in Collin County after jurors heard testimony, evidence, and closing arguments. Anthony, now 19, had argued self-defense. His attorneys said he believed he was being physically threatened during the confrontation at a Frisco ISD track meet.

Jurors rejected that argument and convicted him of murder.

Because Anthony was 17 at the time of the stabbing, the death penalty was not an option. He now faces sentencing, with a possible punishment ranging from five years to 99 years or life in prison.

For Metcalf’s family, the verdict brings a legal answer, though nothing can restore what was lost. Metcalf was a son, brother, student, teammate, and identical twin.

For Anthony and his family, the verdict changes the rest of his life.

Two teenagers went to a school athletic event. One never came home. The other now faces the possibility of decades in prison.
