Duncanville might be the best team in Texas high school football, and maybe in the country.
The Panthers won their 15th straight contest dating back to the playoffs last season, defeating Mesquite 50-6 (game recap below).
A lot of credit goes to five-star quarterback Keelon Russell.
After earning an additional star to make his recruiting score perfect, Russell flipped his commit from SMU to Alabama over the summer, in hopes of starting for the Crimson Tide. However, his path as QB1 with the team depends on the draft declaration decision by current quarterback Jalen Milroe.
Russell feels like he’s that guy already.
“They’re gonna make me great with my talents that I have,” Russell recently said on the Momentum Podcast. “They’re gonna make me an amazing quarterback, talented quarterback… when me and coach Sheridan, we share film. It just be straight flow… I feel like I be QB1 already.”
Russell’s game has certainly been “straight flow” this season, recording 2,486 passing yards and 34 passing touchdowns through seven contest leading up to the team’s most recent Mesquite victory.
Duncanville now have 10 straight wins at home, and have claimed wins in seven contests by 22 points or more. Duncanville could’ve shutout Mesquite, if not for their opponents putting points on the board in the last minute of regulation.
This Thursday, Duncanville will travel to face off against Cedar Hill at 7 p.m. The Longhorns are currently enduring a three-game losing streak.
Duncanville vs Mesquite Game Recap
Duncanville maintained their perfect season with a commanding 50-6 victory over Mesquite, solidifying their reputation as the No. 2 ranked team in the nation. The Panthers wasted no time, scoring early and often. Jaqualon Armstrong led the charge, finding the end zone three times in the first half, including an opening 21-yard touchdown run and a six-yard score near the end of the first quarter. Alabama commit Keelon Russell kept the momentum going with a 29-yard touchdown pass to four-star tight end Zachery Turner.
By halftime, Duncanville held a 43-0 lead, and their defense added a safety to their tally, underscoring their control of the game. Brandon Edwards contributed to the versatile attack, completing a four-yard touchdown pass to Turner for his second scoring catch of the night. Sophomore running back Joe McKinney capped the scoring in the third quarter, breaking free for a 27-yard touchdown run that extended Duncanville’s lead to 50-0.
Mesquite struggled to gain traction against the formidable Duncanville defense, which had the game well in hand by the second half. Despite being stifled for most of the game, Mesquite managed to avoid a shutout with a late fourth-quarter touchdown drive. Quarterback Jaiden Clayton connected with sophomore receiver Krasshaun Waters, who made an impressive catch deep in Duncanville territory, setting up Mesquite’s lone score in the final minute.
This victory marked Duncanville’s tenth consecutive home win and improved their record to 8-0. Looking ahead, Duncanville will take on Cedar Hill on Thursday, where they aim to continue their defensive dominance, having allowed just 13.4 points per game this season. Mesquite (2-7), on a four-game losing streak, will look to turn things around against Waxahachie, a high-scoring team averaging over 30 points per game.
