Former Lake Travis QB Baker Mayfield in Legal Battle
Former Lake Travis star Baker Mayfield may be the likely starter for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers this season, but the Oklahoma grad is currently fighting tougher battles off the field.
Mayfield and his wife, Emily, petitioned an Austin court Tuesday to begin depositions for a lawsuit against six companies. Two were founded by his father, James Mayfield. Apparently, Baker is missing out on roughly $12 million that he invested in those companies. He is requesting financial records starting in 2018, the year he was drafted by the Cleveland Browns as the first pick of the NFL Draft.
Mayfield doesn’t know if the money has been properly and competently invested, has been stolen or otherwise misappropriated, or something in between.
With the Cavaliers, Mayfield led Lake Travis to a 25-2 record during two seasons as the starting quarterback, including a District 15-5A Championship. As a senior, he completed 182 of 288 passes for 2,467 yards with 22 touchdowns.
After a year at Texas Tech, Mayfield transferred to Oklahoma, where he became the sixth player in school history to hoist the Heisman Trophy (2017).
After his short stint with the Browns, he has played professionally with the Carolina Panthers, the Los Angeles Rams and will suit up for the Bucs after Tom Brady announced his retirement. The 28-year-old’s off-field endorsements include marketing deals with Hulu, Progressive, and CBD company Beam.
The petition isn’t a lawsuit, although that could likely come in the future.
