A good winning streak is a necessary evil in high school football. The winning teams naturally have a target on their back and with that—each win gets immensely harder. But for a streak to last, you need great players, a good coach and maybe a little luck.
So in honor of the upcoming Texas high school football season, who has the longest current winning streak in Texas?
There are five teams tied for fourth with 16 wins in a row.
T-4. Brock
The Brock Eagles are riding a lengthy 16-game winning streak and coming off a 3A state championship in 2015. Located west of Fort Worth, the Eagles are led by an experienced head coach in Chad Worrell. He’s no stranger to streaks. Worrell was assistant coach of two state championship Celina teams.
T-4. Cedar Park
The Cedar Park Timberwolves are another team that is riding that 16-game streak. The Timberwolves had an outstanding season as they won their respective 5A state championship in 2015. Their streak will be put to the test early as they face a strong Vandegrift team on Sept. 2.
T-4. George Ranch
From Richmond, Texas, the George Ranch Longhorns won the 5A division I state title, but will be moving up to 6A this season. The Longhorns are returning eleven starters from last season’s team. The main difference for George Ranch will be the adjustment to 6A football; the Longhorns were ranked No. 11 in the 6A Texas AP preseason polls.
T-4. Katy
Perhaps the most recognizable name on the list, the Katy Tigers are fresh off another successful state championship run after defeating Lake Travis 34-7 in the 2015 final. Their 16-game winning streak has been dominant. The Tigers outscored their opponents by a staggering margin of 778-62 including 10 shutouts. It’s no question, the strength of this Tigers team lies with their defense. The Tigers open the season at Austin Westlake, so the streak could be in trouble early.
T-4. La Vega
Coming off a 4A state championship, the La Vega Pirates from Waco are one of the best teams in 4A. Alabama commit, Kedrick James, leads the Pirates from both sides of the ball. The No. 12 ranked tight end via 247Sports Composite, James also plays as the Pirates strong-side defensive end.
Finally, there are three teams tied for first with 31 wins in a row.
T-1. Bremond
The 2A Bremond Tigers have been the class of small school football in the past two years. The Tigers are coming into the 2016-2017 campaign after two straight state championship seasons. Texas A&M commit, Roshauud Paul leads the Tigers as a lethal dual-threat quarterback. During their championship run last season, Paul threw for 28 touchdowns and 2,248 yards passing. Oh yeah, and he also ran for over 2,000 yards and 36 touchdowns. The Tigers will go as Paul goes.
T-1. Canadian
One of the most storied teams in Texas high school football, the Canadian Wildcats are riding their 31-game streak in fashion. During the streak, the Wildcats have averaged over 50 points per game. Make no mistake, the Wildcats aren’t looking to go anywhere and have been predicted to have another strong season in 2017.
T-1. Waskom
Another team taking the 3A by storm, the Waskom Wildcats are riding high after two straight state championships in 2014 and 2015. This season will be substantially harder than those in the past; the Wildcats are only returning seven starters. Their strength lies within the trenches, led by a 6-foot-2 offensive lineman, Jack Smith.
However, these teams have a way to go in order to reach the pinnacle of streaks. The longest winning streak in the state of Texas was by the Celina Bobcats. From 1998 to 2002, the Bobcats won 68 straight games.
