Mansfield Flexes Muscle In Second Half, Runs Past San Angelo Central

MANSFIELD, Texas-Controlling the line of scrimmage can be the difference in the outcome of any football game. Friday night at Vernon Newsome Stadium, the Mansfield Tigers offensive line imposed their will in the 2nd half of a close football game to rush past the San Angelo Central Bobcats 55-37 in a Class 6A Division II Area playoff game.

Mansfield got on the board in the first quarter with a 39-yard field goal by Jarret Holman, after the Tigers drove into Bobcat territory behind running back Avery Chatman to give Mansfield a 3-0 lead. Chatman had 15 carries for 78 before exciting the game with an undisclosed injury. At the 7:34 mark of the first quarter, Holman added his 2nd field goal to put the Tigers up 6-0.

San Angelo Central entered the game unbeaten and were led by quarterback Maverick McIvor. The Bobcats went three and out on their first two drives but did get a 29-yard field goal from Ezekiel Del Rio to cut the deficit in half. ‘

On the ensuing kickoff, Cam’Ron Jones (UCLA pledge) takes the kickoff 94 yard for a touchdown.to give the Tigers a 13-3 lead. But McIvor and wide receiver Henry Teeter were ready for the challenge and drove back into Tigers territory that finished off with a 23-yard pass to Teeter to cut the lead to 13-10. On the ensuing kickoff, Jones mishandled the ball and the Bobcats recovered inside the 10-yard line and McIvor tosses his secondd touchdown to Teeter and the Bobcats lead at halftime 17-13.

Maverick McIvor passed for 373 yards and 4 touchdowns and lead San Angelo Central in rushing with 55 yards. Senior receiver Henry Teeter lead the Bobcats in receiving 12 receptions for 194 yards and two scores, while Jesse Scott Jr. added 9 catches for 123 yards and a touchdown late in the fourth

After trailing 17-13 at halftime and losing Avery Chatman to an injury, Mansfield looked for the next man up. Senior running back Jaqulis Coleman answered when his named was called. On the first snap of the 3rd quarter, Coleman sprinted off tackle 58 yards to open the 2nd half scoring for the Tigers and grab a lead they would not relinquish 20-17.

The Mansfield defense made a few adjustments and the Bobcats went three and out on their 1st possession in the 3rd quarter. After a San Angelo punt, Coleman only needed one play again to gallop 47 yards to put Mansfield up by 10 points 27-17. After a McIvor to Teeter TD cut the Mansfield lead to 27-24, quarterback Shawn Hartsfield connected on a 53-yard bomb to speedster Jackson Gleeson (Baylor pledge) to put the Tigers up 34-24.

After a fumble by San Angelo Central running back De’Marcus Cobb at the Bobcat 25-yard line was recovered by the Mansfield defense, Hartsfield completed a short drive by tossing a 1-yard score to Gleeson, who shook off the defensive back to high step in the end zone. To seal the deal and the game out of reach, Mansfield handed off again to Jaqulis Coleman for a 14-yard score. Coleman ran for 188 yards and 3 touchdowns, all in the second half.

The Mansfield Tiger offensive line lead by Willis Patrick, Grayson Schramme, Lee Williams and Austin Melton, set the tone in the 2nd half. The Tiger offensive line gorged the Bobcats in the second half, which allowed Mansfield to rush for 344 yards, averaging 7.6 a carry

Mansfield (11-1) plays Waco Midway (12-0) Friday at McLane Stadium in Waco at 7pm in the 6A DII regional round.
